Challenging the Dogma in Graham Greene's The Power and the Glory

"The term Catholic fiction was often used to describe the works of celebrated and controversial British novelist Graham Greene. Throughout his long literary career, Greene tended to incorporate serious philosophical themes into seemingly simple and trivial plots of genre fiction, and to reshape many of his genre novels into works of moral and philosophical debate. In his serious novels, he advanced furthermore into the realms of spiritual and gave some of the most elaborate studies of the man’s relationship with the divine. Yet, to call Greene a Catholic novelist seems to be the generalization that obviously excludes some subtler nuances of his artistic vision and does not do justice to the complexity of both narrative and ideological level of his fiction. This paper deals with the centrepiece of Greene’s Catholic Trilogy, The Power and the Glory, and seeks to explore the imposition of religious dogma on the free thinking creative mind of the author, as well as the techniques and narrative devices that Greene employed in order to transcend the level of pure ideology and transform his work into a piece of superior literary art."

A SUMMARIZING QUESTION The Lawless Roads and remarks Greene made on The Power and the Glory make evident the enormous extent to which the situation, plot, and characters of the novel depend on and derive from Greene’s trip to Mexico investigating the persecution of the Catholic Church there and its resistance. However, none of that prevents Greene also finding himself in Mexico and writing himself in the novel. He is there, and not there, in the four mirrors: priest, police, captain, and dentist, and also in more than these. While asking how Greene may be creating –revealing himself in The Power and the Glory, let us not fail to remind ourselves both from the novel itself, and from Greene’s life as created in his fiction, that we are incapable of self-knowledge and self-judgment. The Man Within, Greene’s first published novel, represents the tone and temperament of his fiction of the thirties. It is Greene’s initial exercise as a novelist into the underworld of suffering, crime, vice and violence. The Man Within dramatises the tension in contemporary life, the changes affecting the world order and the individual life. At this stage, Greene’s religious vision is only shadowy as it lies in Andrews’ awareness of duality in his nature and vaguely in Elizabeth’s saintly attitudes. The Man Within is a highly autobiographical novel. The Man Within, to quote Graham Smith, “is a gesture towards his (Greene’s) own past, the period of ambition and hope...” 1. That’s true, because Greene for the material of his novels relies partly on his personal experiences and partly on the imaginative skill. He believes: “A writer’s knowledge of himself, realistic and unromantic is like a store of energy in which he must draw for a life time. One volt of it properly directed will bring a character alive.”2

At the core of this book lies the relation between Power (as socio-political phenomenon) and the novel (as literary discourse). It shows that, in a society facing the excess of power in its various forms, novelistic fiction mediates knowledge about societal Power structures and uses specific strategies to subvert and denounce them. The first part of the study is theoretical: it presents some of the most prominent theories of Power, from Plato, Machiavelli, Nietzsche to Weber, Dahl, Lukes, Parsons, Bourdieu or Foucault. After offering a critical approach to the concepts of Power defined in the social, political and philosophical fields, it articulates the relations of Power imprinted in literary discourse within a typology of four categories. In the second part of the book, this taxonomy of Power is applied to four key novels in the context of Romanian "literary crossroads", showing how novelistic fiction not only assume a critical and subversive position against the excess of Power, but also unveils our fragility when experiencing History.
